In the
last devotion we talked about what Jesus called’ “The Great Commandment.”
“You shall
love the Lord you God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all
your might.”
Jesus said
that the next important commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself.
As recorded in Luke 10:29 the lawyer that Jesus was talking to asked, “Who is
my neighbor?” Jesus answered with a Parable of the Good Samaritan.
Let’s read Luke 10:30-37.
The Good
Samaritan loved his neighbor unconditionally.
There is
another question that could have been asked, and that question is: How
can I love my neighbor if I don’t even love myself? Let’s test you
on that question. Try holding your breath for ten minutes. Yeah
right! You could not do it because you love your body. You love
living. But, then you say, “I don’t love myself with feeling.” Well
there is an answer for that also. Love is not a feeling. It is an
action and a person. The bible tells us in 1st John 4:7-8 that
God is love. “We must love one another: for God is Love: and everyone
that loves is born of God, and knows God. He that does not love, does not
know God; for God is Love.
Without
God you cannot love yourself or your neighbor in the way Jesus says to love.
It is time
to refocus on God so that we may love ourselves and our neighbors.
Loving
Father,
Help me to
love myself and my neighbor.
In the
loving name of Jesus, Amen.
