Scripture:
"But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah, the Ammonite servant, and
Geshem the Arab heard of it, they jeered at us and despised us and said,
"What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the
king?" Nehemiah 2:19
Good morning,
let’s look into this scripture in Nehemiah, at this point Nehemiah had arrived
in Jerusalem and looked over the damage of the walls and constructed a plan to
rebuild the walls. He brought it before the people and encouraged them to help
build. These three men, Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem were against the
Israelites and did not want to see the wall rebuilt and tried to discourage
them from building it. When words didn't work they tried to destroy the parts
of the wall that were reconstructed, forcing Nehemiah to leave men on guard. When
they failed at that point they then tried to kill Nehemiah by getting him to
come to a meeting with them. These three men did everything they could to
stop the building of the wall, but Nehemiah stayed strong and got the people to
continue to build until the wall was complete.
Let’s look
at this from today’s perspective. Have you ever been called to do something and
it seems there are always people there to try and stop you from completing what
God called you to do? We all have our Sanballat's, Tobiahs’, and
Geshem's; people who seemingly will do anything to stop you from doing what God
called you to do. There are too many times we give into them and get
discouraged slow down our work and eventually quit and give up. Don't you think
its time we stop letting the enemy and people dictate whether or not we will do
God's work? Why do we get so discouraged so quickly and quit so fast?
I have
been there before. I can remember youth nights where I get there and there are
only 2 kids. Part of me got discouraged and wanted to just quit for the night
and have a game night. But why keep those kids from God's word because I am
discouraged? Its time to complete the job God called us to do! Stop
giving in, stop being discouraged and look at Nehemiah and push forward. Because
no one is greater than our God; and He will provide a way for us to complete
our calling. In closing I want to encourage those who are on the brink of
giving up on their calling with a simple, “don't let the enemy discourage you
and continue marching on for the kingdom of Christ!”
Let us pray, Dear Father there are
times we feel like we cant get the job done you called us to do, Lord give us
the strength to push on and answer the call. In Jesus name Amen
